Guidelines While on Game Drives

  • No cellular phones may be switched on during game drives.
  • During the course of the game drives, you will view many animals, including the Big 5 species (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo & elephant) from a very close distance. The animals in these areas are accustomed to game viewing vehicles, so you don¡¦t need to be afraid ¡V rather enjoy the privilege of viewing them at such a close distance!
  • The term "Big 5" is an African hunting term, and refers to the 5 most dangerous animals to hunt on foot.
  • Remain seated for the duration of the drive. It is important for you not to break the shape of the vehicle, as the animals view the vehicle as one object.
  • No smoking on the game drive, and if you do smoke during a sundowner or morning coffee stop, please seek instruction from your guide on what to do with the cigarette but.
  • No littering in the bush!
  • In reserves like the Sabi Sand and Timbavati Game Reserves, game viewing vehicles are allowed to drive off road when following members of the "Big 5". Watch out for overhanging branches just duck don't grab hold of any of them, as many could have unseen thorns.
  • Your guide is specifically qualified to conduct game drives in a specific region, so go ahead and ask him/her as many questions as possible!
  • The Shangaan trackers from the Sabi Sand and Timbavati Game Reserves have been living and working in the bush for years. Although many of them may appear very shy, they too will eagerly answer any questions that you may have, whether it be about the fauna & flora, or the customs of the local tribes!
  • Lastly, and most important: ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF THE GAME DRIVES AND CONSIDER YOURSELF PRIVELEDGED TO EXPERIENCE SUCH A SPECIAL PART OF AFRICA!
GENERAL SAFARI GUIDELINES

The golden rule here is to pack as lightly as possible.

You don't want to be stuck with a lot of heavy baggage that you might not use anyway.

Space will be at a premium in the safari vehicle and also if you are going to be using a light aircraft to get to the camp.
